In the electronic components supply chain, a shortage of a single component can have a ripple effect across an entire production line. For customers whose products have already completed the design stage and entered mass production, the sudden unavailability of an original component can create significant challenges. Finding an alternative involves far more than identifying another supplier—it also requires consideration of specifications, package dimensions, technical validation, and subsequent delivery.
How can companies maintain product compatibility while shortening the replacement cycle and reducing supply risk? This is a common challenge that supply chain service providers need to address.
In this case, an overseas EMS company faced a potential delay to its production schedule because the original AVX tantalum capacitor was no longer available. In response to the customer’s requirements, Flyking worked together with its affiliated company Grand Vision Electronics to identify a suitable alternative, support technical validation, and secure subsequent volume supply. The project ultimately enabled the customer to transition from the original component to the alternative within a relatively short timeframe.
Customer Requirement: Original Component Unavailable, Production Schedule at Risk
The overseas EMS company was using an AVX tantalum capacitor in production. During procurement, however, the customer found that the original part had no available global inventory, while the existing lead time was far longer than the required production cycle.
For a customer already moving forward with production, waiting for the original component to become available again was not a practical option. The customer needed to identify an alternative that could meet the required technical specifications with minimal changes to the existing design, while also completing sample validation and securing volume supply as quickly as possible.
This meant that the key challenge was not simply finding a capacitor with similar specifications. The alternative solution needed to strike a balance between compatibility, validation efficiency, and subsequent delivery, ensuring that it could genuinely support the customer’s production requirements.
Solution: Quickly Identify an Alternative and Accelerate Validation and Delivery
Based on the customer’s requirements, Grand Vision Electronics and its partner team conducted a targeted search for alternative components and successfully identified PXTL010M227E040STU, an alternative product from Jiangsu Zhenhua Xinyun Electronic.
The selected part offered a pin-to-pin match with the original AVX component. While meeting the relevant technical requirements, this helped minimize design changes and additional engineering adjustments, providing a solid basis for the customer’s validation and product introduction process.
To further support the customer’s engineering team in evaluating the alternative, we prepared an English-language product datasheet for technical assessment and sample validation, and provided 150 samples for testing.
After receiving the samples, the customer completed testing and approved the alternative model within two weeks. Once the product was confirmed to meet the relevant requirements, we immediately proceeded with the volume order.
A total of 70,000 units were ultimately delivered, with a lead time of only four weeks for the volume order.
From alternative model selection and technical documentation to sample validation and volume supply, each stage was coordinated around the customer’s production schedule, minimizing unnecessary waiting caused by gaps between procurement, engineering, and delivery processes.
Project Results: Shortening the Replacement Cycle and Improving Supply Certainty
The project not only addressed the customer’s immediate procurement challenge caused by the shortage of the original component, but also established an additional sourcing channel for future purchases.
Through compatibility matching, rapid validation, and volume delivery, the customer was able to introduce the alternative product within a relatively short timeframe while reducing reliance on a single brand.
· Accelerating Alternative Adoption and Reducing the Risk of Production Delays
By identifying a compatible alternative and completing sample validation, the customer was able to move forward with its production schedule despite the unavailability of the original component, reducing the risk of production delays caused by component shortages.
· Optimizing Procurement Costs
While meeting the customer’s relevant technical requirements, the alternative solution offered a unit price more than 37.3% lower than the market price of the AVX component, providing the customer with a more competitive option for reducing component procurement costs.
· Minimizing Design Changes and Simplifying Product Introduction
The pin-to-pin compatibility reduced the need for design changes and additional engineering adjustments, allowing the customer to complete validation and product introduction more efficiently.
· Establishing an Additional Supply Channel
The project not only fulfilled the urgent order, but also established a new sourcing channel for the customer’s future procurement needs, reducing reliance on a single brand and strengthening supply chain resilience.
From Alternative Selection to Volume Delivery: Connecting Every Stage of the Supply Chain
Electronic component replacement is not simply about finding a part that works. It also requires careful consideration of technical compatibility, validation efficiency, delivery capability, and long-term supply.
In this project, from the shortage of the original component to alternative product selection, sample validation, and volume delivery, we coordinated each stage around the customer’s actual production requirements. This helped shorten the replacement cycle, reduce procurement costs, and establish a more sustainable supply solution for future demand.
For companies facing component shortages, extended lead times, or alternative sourcing requirements, finding a suitable replacement is only the first step. The real value of supply chain services lies in ensuring that the alternative solution can be successfully implemented and continue to meet production requirements over time.
With extensive supplier resources, component selection capabilities, and cross-functional coordination experience, we continue to provide end-to-end support—from alternative selection and sample validation to volume procurement and subsequent supply—helping customers maintain production continuity and supply chain flexibility amid changing supply conditions.
